Membrane Distillation / Pervaporation

Porous Materials Inc., USA manufactures novel platforms for testing of porous materials and is a well recognized market leader in porosity solutions. With more than 35 years experience, PMI provides a wide array of lab instruments targeted at both academia and industries for analysis of powder and bulk materials.

Our instruments can measure surface area, density, pore size, pore size distribution, specific gas and vapor interactions (Porometer, Porosimeter, Permeameter, Pycnometer, BET Sorptometer and many more).

Feature : All Four Techniques available

  1. Direct Contact Method
  2. Sweeping Gas Method
  3. Vacuum Induced Method
  4. Air Gap Method

Basic Layout

Membrane distillation is a membrane seperation/concentration process which has vapor pressure (temperature) gradient/difference between the feed and the permeate side of a hydrophobic membrane as the driving force for the process, in other words, membrane distillation is a thermally driven sepration process in which sepration is enabled due to phase change. A Hydrophobic membrane acts as a barrier for the liquid phase , letting the vapor phase ( e.g. water vapor) pass through the membrane's pores.
In simple terms heated salt water (feed) flows across one side and chilled salt free water (permeate) flows across the other side of a hydrophobic membranes at pressure less than the breakthrough pressure of the membrane since it is hydrophobic.
